Voting Process and Ballot Tabulators
Voting Process
When a voter enters a voting station, a greeter will meet the voter and ensure the voter is in the correct voting station (voters must vote in the station linked to where they live).
The voter will then be directed to a table where a Deputy Returning Officer will require the voter to complete and sign a Voting Register and declare school support. Upon declaring his/her eligibility, the voter will receive his/her ballot in a secrecy sleeve and be directed to an area behind a voting screen to mark the ballot.
The voter then returns the ballot in the secrecy sleeve to the Technical Returning Officer, who will wait beside the City’s ballot tabulators. The officer or the voter will insert the ballot into the tabulator to be counted.
Ballots and Ballot Tabulators
The City uses paper ballots. One large ballot is assigned to each voter, showing the names of candidates for all offices on it. Voters indicate their selection by marking the box next to their preferred candidate.
The City will again utilize leading electoral technology for the tabulation of paper ballots. These digital electronic ballot tabulators are machines that are able to read coded paper ballots and store information electronically until asked to produce the results. This technology has led to significant decreases in ballot-processing time, while also increasing the security, accuracy and responsiveness of the vote. After reading a ballot, the tabulator will deposit the ballot into the ballot box. All ballots are available for verification following the voting process, if required.
Election Results
Election results will be released as the results from each polling station are processed. Unofficial results will be posted live on the City’s website, in both graphical and text based format and provided to media outlets as well. Typically, all results are in before 9 p.m. on Election Day.
Note that the City will also host an Election Results Event on Election Day (October 18, 2010) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event will be held at St. Albert Place and will feature a live broadcast of the (unofficial) results, as they are tabulated. The event will be open to the media, candidates and the general public. Refreshments will also be available. Watch this website for further information.
The Returning Officer will release official election results at 12 noon on October 22, 2010.
