Frequently Asked Questions

1. How does the City get a reading from my water meter that is inside my house?

There is a remote reader located on the outside of almost every residence. A meter reader comes to the home, locates the reader and obtains the reading from it. It is important that you not block this reader as it would make it difficult for the meter reader to obtain a reading from it. There are three types of readers that the City uses, one of which you should find on the exterior of your home:

Pro Reader
Arb Reader
Remote Reader

If you are not able to locate your reader or find:
- that it is in a poor location (such as covered by a large bush, shed or deck);
- you keep your gate locked; or
- there is a dog in the yard;

Please contact Utilities services and inquire if an appointment should be booked to have the remote reader relocated to an easily accessible location. This will prevent you having to phone in your readings or having an estimate done on your billing. In most circumstances, your remote reader will be relocated at no cost to you.

Some properties also have a remote reader (not on exterior – no picture provided) that sends out a radio frequency that is picked up by our meter reading equipment as the meter reader passes the property.

2. Why is the charge for sewer treatment more than water?

Sewer treatment and water are billed according to consumption; however, each is billed at a different rate, so they do not reflect the same charges. Also, the rate (as is the operating cost) to treat sewer is higher than treating water. Please refer to the rate chart.

3. Can I change my waste (brown) cart subscription or my organics (green) cart size?

Yes, there are three sizes of waste carts to choose from, 60 Litres, 120 Litres or 240 Litres and there aretwo sizes of organics carts to choose from, 120 Litre or 240 Litre.

Simply call Utilities Services at 780-459-1520 (option 2) or visit them at St. Albert Place, main floor, opposite to the library at 5 St. Anne Street, to exchange the size of either or both of your carts. Keep in mind that the lower PAYT level you are on, the less you pay. The rates increase as the cart size increases for your waste. There is no price variance for the organics cart as we want to encourage everyone to use the organics as much as possible.

4. Why does my garbage pick-up day change from time to time?

Your scheduled pick up day will always be the same at that property. The only variance to this is if the scheduled day falls on a statutory holiday that week, then the pick-up will move to the next business day; your next pick-up will default to back to the same day it was originally.

For example:

If your pick up is on a Friday, but Friday is a statutory holiday that week, your cart will be emptied on Monday, then you will have your regular pick-up on Friday again even though it’s the same week.

If your pick up is Monday and Monday is a holiday, pick-up will occur Tuesday for that week only and default back to Monday.
