St. Albert Smart Growth Principles

St. Albert is focusing on four key Smart Growth principles to guide development in the annexed lands.

The community had an opportunity to provide input on these principles through the Smart Growth Community Image Survey in 2007.

Walkability

  • Buildings facing and enclosing the streets
  • Dense, mixed use centres and corridors
  • Safe and comfortable pedestrian experiences in all seasons
Livability
  • Interesting and varied streetscapes
  • Wider, well-designed sidewalks
  • Well-designed, well-used civic spaces

Connectivity

  • Easy access to frequent, reliable transit
  • A place for bikes
  • Direct linkages between and within neighbourhoods
  • Modified grid street system
Sustainability
  • Combine built and natural systems
  • Energy efficient housing and neighbourhoods
