Outdoor Rink Maintenance

Notice to residents: ALL outdoor rinks are CLOSED for the season.

The City’s Public Works crews maintain 28 sheets of outdoor ice rinks for skaters in St. Albert.  Each year, staff will begin flooding the rinks as soon as the weather and temperatures permit.  The season will usually begin once the ice is safe for residents to skate on and usually runs from mid-December until the end of February.  The lights will be turned on when the surfaces are safe and ready for use.  Rinks are considered to be closed when temperatures reach -23°C or greater. For more details please contact the Outdoor Rink Closure & Information Line at 780-459-1568.

Maintenance staff are on site at those outdoor rinks with change buildings.  The hours of opertaion are Wednesday to Friday 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 1 p.m. – 9 p.m.  Maintenance of these ice surfaces occurs between the hours outlined above, approximately between 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday (weather permitting).

There are no regularly scheduled maintenance staff provided at outdoor rinks without change buildings.  Maintenance of these ice surfaces occurs Monday to Friday, approximately between 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (weather permitting).

Lakes & Ponds

Each fall the City crews post “Thin Ice” signs where surfaces are not safe.  Crews remove the signs only when measurements across the whole surface are adequate to ensure safety.

Lacombe Park Lake – Maintenance will commence only where there is a safe thickness of ice. This surface is not supervised.  (Hockey nets are also provided at this ice surface).

Kingswood Oval – This surface is not supervised.

Heritage Lakes Park Pond – This is not a safe surface for skating and is not cleared by City staff.
