Public Consultations & Hearings
City Council, or a delegated authority of Council, makes the decisions on planning proposals. Public consultation is how residents and other stakeholders are informed, consulted and heard before that decision is made. Different methods of public consultation include public hearings, public notification, appeals, public meetings, open houses, surveys or focus groups.
The City is required by provincial law to notify the people who live or own land near a project of upcoming public hearings or of certain decisions by the City related to that project.
The City’s Public Consultation Policy ( PDF - 1.4MB ) requires additional opportunities for public input. Generally a two-part consultation process is required. The first is an opportunity to provide suggestions and feedback on issues and/or options for a particular proposal, often through a public meeting or an open house. A second opportunity may come later, and is intended to provide information on the final proposal, including how input from the first session was included.
