Management Systems

ISO 14001

Environmental Management Systems (EMS) provide a systematic approach for organizations to bring environmental considerations into decision-making and day-to-day operations and provides a framework for tracking, evaluating and communicating environmental performance. In essence, an EMS helps ensure that major environmental risks and liabilities are identified, minimized and managed.

ISO 14001 is an international standard for environmental excellence by the International Organization for Standardization.
St. Albert Transit
In 2005, St. Albert Transit (StAT) attained ISO 14001 registration and was the first transit system of its size in the province to achieve this success. It received recertification in July 2011. Renewal date is January 2015.

St. Albert Transit's environmental management system focuses on six environmental programs, which benefit the environment and also make good business sense:
  • Fuel Management and Inventory Control

  • Hydraulic Hoist Operations Improvements

  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions

  • Energy Efficiency

  • Waste Management

The audit on the environmental management system included some of the following highlights:

  • Zero hydraulic fluid losses in 2010 from the garage's four hydraulic hoists, demonstrating that the preventative maintenance procedures are working well. To provide context, from 2006 to 2010, 140 litres were lost in total as compared to an estimated loss of 700 litres in 2003 prior to the EMS program.
  • Two new storage tanks for fuel and waste oil incorporate the latest best management practices in storage tank management and are inspected on a weekly basis as part of a preventative maintenance program. Fuel verification has enabled better fuel ordering procedures.
  • "Smart Driver" program has been reintroduced to provide focused training for bus operators on more fuel-efficient driving techniques. This program will be an integral part of the Greenhouse Gas EMS program and a means to achieving our target of a five per cent reduction in greenhouse gases from 2008 levels by 2015.
  • StAT's Idle-free policy is in place with drivers shutting off their engines for stops greater than three minutes, which aligns with St. Albert's Idle-free Bylaw.
