Household Hazardous Waste Information

Effective October 1, 2011, the City of St. Albert accepts certain household hazardous waste materials as listed below.

What is Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)?

 Household hazardous waste includes products that are:

·     Corrosive - Can eat away at surfaces, including skin.

Batteries, drain cleaners and oven cleaners

·     Flammable – Burn or ignite easily

Paints, oils and barbecue starters

·     Explosive – Can explode when mixed with other chemicals or react under pressure or heat

Aerosols and propane tanks

·     Toxic/Poisonous – Can be poisonous or lethal to living organisms, even in small quantities

Bleach, cleaning fluids and pesticides

Where is the City's household hazardous waste collection site?

The household hazardous waste collection site is located at the Recycling Depot, 7 Chevigny St, in the Campbell Business Park.  For more information about this location, including hours of operation please visit www.stalbert.ca/recycle-depot.

What types of household hazardous waste does the City ACCEPT at the collection site?

Paint, paint cans and aerosols including:
  • Concrete and driveway (non-tar based) paints
  • Deck, porch and floor paints
  • Empty paint cans and pails
  • Enamels
  • Fence and barn paints
  • Interior and exterior latex (water-based) and alkyd (oil-based) paints

  • Interior and exterior varnishes and urethanes
  • Marine paint (must not contain pesticides)
  • Non-catalyzed and non-nitrocellulous lacquers and paints
  • Paint aerosols
  • Primers, undercoats and water repellent sealers
  • Rust and decorative metal paints
  • Shellac
  • Tree marking paints
  • Wood finishing oils and stain
  Most types of household cleaners including:
  • Abrasive cleaners
  • Acetone
  • Aerosol paints/sprays
  • Air fresheners (aerosol)
  • All-purpose cleaners (solvent-based)
  • Ammonia

  • Commercial hazardous waste
  • Corrosive products
  • Deck cleaners
  • Epoxies
  • Expired medications
  • Explosives
  • Fibreglass resins
  • Fireworks
    Galvanizing coatings
  • Gasoline, diesel or any other types of fuels or their containers
  • Munition
  • Paint brushes, rags or rollers
  • Pressurized gases

  • Propane tanks or canisters
  • Radioactive waste
  • Roof patch, tars and grease
  • Solvents, thinners and mineral spirits
  • Spray adhesives
  • Tires

  • Catalyzed and nitrocellulous lacquer and paint
  • Chaulk-based aerosols or liquids
  • Colourants and tints
  • Industrial application paints
  • Ink based aerosols or liquids
  • Non-aerosol automotive paints
  • Paint or wood preservatives containing pesticides
  • Tar-based aerosols or liquids
  • Traffic marking paints
  • Two-part or component paint

Where can I bring items that are not accepted at the City's household hazardous waste collection site?

Residents can bring items not accepted at this site to the City of Edmonton's Eco Station locations.  For more information please visit the Eco Station webpage.

What about St. Albert's Household Hazardous Waste Event?

Instead of hosting an annual Household Hazardous Waste Roundup event, The City of St. Albert has made changes to the Recycle Depot to accommodate the collection of the select list of hazardous material listed above year round.
