St. Albert Transit 'Handibus' is a service designed to assist in meeting the mobility needs of City of St. Albert residents who cannot use regular accessible transit services due to a physical or cognitive disability.
Please note: The majority of St. Albert's regular transit service is now fully accessible with low floor or lift-equipped buses. Accessible buses permit easy entry by persons using wheelchairs, scooters or those with mobility restrictions and operate on all local transit routes and on commuter routes to and from Edmonton. Please check our Ride Guide or office to find out which trips are not accessible.
Eligibility
Any resident of the City of St. Albert who is unable to utilize the existing accessible regular public transit service due to a physical or cognitive disability and is registered with St. Albert Transit.
All Handibus customers must be registered with St. Albert Transit prior to booking a trip.
Registration Process
Patrons must complete Part A of a registration form and have Part B completed by a qualified medical practitioner (Medical Doctor, Occupational Health or Physiotherapist) to state and verify the medical reasons that result in not being able to access regular transit accessible service.
Registration forms are available online or at the Transit Office. Return the completed registration form to:

Types of Handibus Trips
Reservation Trips - are for occasional or casual trips. All Handibus bookings are on a "first come, first served" basis, based on availability. Trips can be booked to a maximum of 4 weeks in advance as schedules allow. Our staff will offer alternate times if we cannot accommodate the time requested.
Subscription Trips - are long term continuous bookings for travel to work or school only. Based on availability, these trips will be booked from the same origin to the same destination, at the same time and on the same day of each week. Once booked, subscription service runs as long as needed.
Cancelling a Trip
If you need to cancel a trip, phone the Transit Office at 780-418-6060 during business hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) Monday to Friday. Your cooperation in cancelling saves making unnecessary trips and may allow another patron to use the cancelled trip.
No Shows
A customer is considered a "no-show" when the driver arrives at the scheduled time and location and no one is there, or the customer cancels at the door. Drivers will wait 5 minutes and proceed to the next booking. Please note: Continuous no-shows will be reviewed and may lead to suspension of service.
Twenty Minute Window
We aim to provide on-time service as far as practicable. However, on some occasions we may experience delays and therefore it may be necessary to pick you up earlier or later. To ensure flexibility in the system, please be ready 10 minutes before and up to 10 minutes after your scheduled pick up time.
Wheelchairs and Scooters
For the safety of all passengers, all wheelchairs, walkers and scooters transported on the Handibus must meet specific size, weight and safety guidelines. All mobility aids must be kept in good repair at all times.
The combined weight of the chair (or scooter) and passenger cannot exceed 800 lbs (362 kg) in total weight.
Maximum base dimensions for wheelchairs, walkers and scooters: 33 x 54 inches (83 x 137 cm). Equipment larger than this cannot be accommodated.
Wheelchairs and scooters must have functioning brakes. No flags or projections are permitted.
Drivers will provide the following assistance:
- Drivers shall operate power lifts and secure wheelchairs and scooters in wheelchair restraint devices.
- Assist passengers with shoulder straps and seat belts.
- Assist passengers on and off vehicles.
- Drivers will assist, as necessary, riders on and off the vehicle and with travel between the vehicle and the inside of the first exterior accessible doors at the place of origin and/or destination. An accessible door is a door with no more than one step.
- Drivers will ring doorbell at residences (not apartment buildings).
- Drivers will enter the designated pick-up door to make passengers aware of their presence.
- Assistance includes help up or down a maximum of one step.
Drivers will not:
- Go looking for patrons in malls, hospitals, offices, etc.
- Drivers will not carry parcels or baggage, so clients must limit their possessions to those they can carry on their own.
- Make repairs or adjustments to client equipment.
- Wait more than 5 minutes past the booked trip time.
Patron Responsibilities
Be ready and waiting at the door for the bus at the prescribed pick-up time.
For the safety of patrons and drivers it is essential that travel paths from doorways, sidewalks and driveways are clear of snow and ice.
St. Albert Transit Handibus aims to provide transit service when you need it but it should not be treated like a taxi or an ambulance.
