Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Through the approval of the Environmental Master Plan, the City committed to reducing non-renewable energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.  To reach this goal and associated targets, the City became a member of the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program in March of 2010.
200th Member!
The City of St. Albert was the 200th municipality in Canada to become a member of the PCP program.

The PCP program is based on a five milestone framework to guide municipalities in reducing greenhouse gases in the community and local government operations. As a member, the City is committed to achieve the five program milestones, which include:

  1. Complete a greenhouse gas inventory and forecast;
  2. Set an emissions reductions target;
  3. Develop a community and corporate greenhouse gas emissions reduction action plan;
  4. Implement the action plan;
  5. Monitor progress and report results.

The City recently completed a corporate and community greenhouse gas inventory and set revised targets. City Council approved the following targets on January 31, 2011:

  • Reduce corporate (City) emissions to 20% below 2008 levels by 2020
  • Reduce community emissions to 6% below 2008 levels by 2020
