General Information

Be Winter Waste Wise!

As the snow falls and the Christmas season approaches, the City of St. Albert is asking residents to remember the following waste and recycling tips to help make winter waste collection easy and safe for everyone.

For more information please visit www.stalbert.ca/winterwaste

Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) System

New residents to St. Albert should set up a utilities account to pay for garbage and recycling collections, composting, and water and sewer services.

All homeowners in St. Albert subscribe to the Pay-As-You-Throw waste management system. The exception is multi-family  (condominium and townhouse) complexes, which have an agreement with the City to opt out of the program in favour of private garbage collection.

Waste Carts
Brown waste carts are available in three sizes: 60 litres, 120 litres and 240 litres.  Household garbage will be picked up once every two weeks.

Organics Carts
Green organics carts are available in two sizes: 120 litres and 240 litres. There is no difference in cost between cart sizes.
Household organics will be picked up weekly from mid-April to mid-October and every second week from mid-October to mid-April.

For cost information, visit the Solid Waste Utility Rates section.

General Cart Information

Carts belong to the house address they are assigned to, as identified by a bar code on the cart. For identification purposes, the City of St. Albert recommends you record the serial numbers of your waste and organics carts.

The organics and waste carts must be placed out by 7 a.m. on your waste collection pickup day.  To move your cart to the street, hold the cart by both handles and tilt it towards you. Then push or pull it toward the street.
Ensure you leave at least one metre between:

  • your carts and any obstacles
  • your waste cart and your organics cart

Please ensure the lid is fully closed on each cart. If the lids on your carts can not be closed, your waste and organics may not be collected.

Please do not:

  • overfill carts
  • contaminate carts with improper material
  • pack garbage into carts
  • leave garbage beside carts
  • write or spray paint on carts

The City recommends rinsing your carts periodically with water to wash away debris and buildup. Allow the carts to dry completely before the next use.

Moving?

If you move, the carts must be left at the residence or you may be charged for them.

Damaged or Stolen Cart?

If your cart is damaged, stolen or vandalized, please call Public Works at 780-459-1557.

Frequently Asked Questions - Waste and Organics Cart Information

If you have additional garbage above your subscription level, you can purchase garbage bag tags at St. Albert Place, Fountain Park Recreation Centre or Servus Credit Union Place. These tags can be placed on garbage bags and dropped off in the appropriate location at the Recycling Depot, located at 7 Chevigny Street.
Residents must use black or green garbage bags. The maximum size for garbage bags is 76 centimetres/30 inches wide and 86 centimetres/34 inches high. Each bag must not weigh more than 15 kilograms/33 pounds.

Other Items

St. Albert also has curbside recycling for residents who receive curbside garbage pickup. In addition, the City has a recycling depot, as well as a compost depot to facilitate reducing waste in the community.

Christmas trees are collected from January 10 until the end of January. Residents should place their unwrapped Christmas tree at the curb with other refuse on their designated day. As trees are not collected by the regular refuse trucks, residents may note a slight difference in collection times.

Related waste management and recycling events include the annual Take-It-Or-Leave event, which is held in June and provides residents with the opportunity to dispose of unwanted, usable items. Compost giveaways are held in the spring and fall as well.

Leaf Pickup:
During the fall months you can take your leaves to the City's compost yard located on Villeneuve Road, free of charge. The hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. You can also leave your bags of leaves at curbside on your refuse day for the month of October. Please do not put grass in with your leaves.
