Our History

Since 1910, St. Albert Fire Services has proudly served the community’s citizens. The first fire brigade was formed in January 1910, following a fire the previous year that destroyed the town’s fire equipment. From 1910 – 1975, a strong contingent of volunteer firefighters protected the community. Volunteers continued to supplement full-time staff until 1978.

Similar to many other communities, St. Albert saw many significant fire events in the early 1900s, which led to the development of the city's first fire prevention bylaws. In 1975, St. Albert City Council passed a bylaw that called for the creation of a full-time fire department. Two years later, an ambulance service was introduced and the department operated as such until 2000. At that time, St. Albert Fire Services became an integrated service, which means staff took on both firefighter and emergency medical functions.

In mid-2009, the provincial government assumed responsibility for ambulance service across Alberta. While staff remain trained in both areas, it is required that some are solely assigned to ambulance service. The new provincial model will be fully phased in by 2011.
