1. When are snowplows sent out and how long does it take to clear the streets after a snowfall?
|
Street snow plowing begins when 2 - 5 cm of snow has accumulated. Streets will be maintained in the priority sequence outlined in the Snow & Ice Control Policy. Streets with higher speed limits and heavier traffic flow have the highest priority. Depending on the priority level, streets are normally cleared within 8 to 24 hours. 2. My street is slippery; what are the sanding priorities?
Streets are sanded according to the priority sequence outlined in the Snow & Ice Control Policy. Special attention is given to hills, curves and intersections. The streets are inspected continually to determine where traction sand is needed.
3. When are sidewalks and trails cleared of snow and ice?
|
Sidewalk and trail clearing begins when 1 - 5 cm of snow has accumulated. Sections of trail will be maintained as in the Snow & Ice Control Policy. Sidewalks and trails that run through the river valley, by transit terminals, or are adjacent to civic buildings, receive the highest priority. For more information please click on the map. |

4. When do residential streets receive snow removal?
Snow removal shall normally occur after an average of 12 - 15 cm of snow pack has accumulated in the driving lanes. When snowplows clear residential streets snow is graded and plowed on the boulevards. At that time ridges in residents’ driveways are also cleared. Where snow cannot be plowed on boulevards, such as in cul de sacs, snow will be stockpiled and hauled away as resources and time permits. The residential snow removal process normally takes approximately 10 days with the exception of the stockpiles mentioned above.
5. When do City parking lots get snow cleared?
Parking lots shall normally be cleared after an accumulation of 5 - 10 cm of snow. Snow will be initially stockpiled and removed at a later date as time and resources allow.
6. How do I ensure safe sidewalks and driveways during the deep freeze?
Mix small rock chips with sand to improve traction. Ice melt is not effective in temperatures below minus 17 degrees Celcius.
7. Where can I get free sand?
The City provides free sand at the Recycling Depot on 7 Chevigny St and in parking lots in the following five rinks: Alpine, Willoughby, Gatewood, Flagstone and Larose.
