Curbside Organics

Residents must use the City-supplied green organics carts to dispose of acceptable organics. Bags are recommended, but not required for waste and organics disposal. If you choose to use bags, only compostable bags with the BPI or Compostable logo are permitted in the organics collection program. These bags are usually light green in colour and can be purchased from most stores that sell garbage bags.

Organics will be picked up weekly from mid-April to mid-October, and once every two weeks from mid-October to mid-April.

Your organics cart must be placed out by 7 a.m. on your organics collection day. Please ensure your cart is one metre clear of any obstacle in any direction, including overhead.

For more information you can also visit the following pages:
-
the waste and organics frequently asked questions section, including where to place your carts; and

- the curbside organics frequently asked questions section.

Organic material can be placed directly in your cart; however, the City of St. Albert suggests the following:
  • Use your kitchen collector to collect food scraps and empty them into your green cart when it is full. It can also be used with or without a lining of compostable bags, paper bags or newsprint.
  • Line the green cart's bottom and sides with a few pages of newspaper or soiled cardboard.
  • Alternate layers of wet and dry material. Dump the wet material from your kitchen collector into the cart and follow it with a layer of dry material, such as newspaper.
  • Do not pack material into the cart as this may cause material to become stuck.
