Basement Suite Information

City Council has approved amendments to the Land Use Bylaw to enable the development of basement suites in single-family dwellings in St. Albert. These amendments allow one suite to be developed in the basement of a single-family dwelling, providing St. Albert's Land Use Bylaw requirements are met.

Basement suites offer homeowners a number of benefits, such as additional income and mortgage assistance, while providing rental housing in the community.

The safety of basement suites is a priority. As such, the City has established a Development Permit process and Inspection Program for basement suites. This program is to ensure that all basement suites meet the Land Use Bylaw and Alberta Building Code standards. These requirements ultimately provide for safe occupancy and quality of life for the residents of basement suites.
